At the Hole in the Wall

#Dublin

1988

The afternoon's quiet Sustained my latest thought That I had reached some dream state Where things were clear and bright. It was all vain I knew, Cloaked by walls Calmed by smells, This idea of you. "How easily," said a creeping voice. "Things would break outside this house." "I would not cave in," I replied. "Where once I went with my happy, noble, starry-eyed stride." But these again but vain conflicts To stir a too-still river, And once more I would find my mind Back on my make-believe lover. "She is the air and I am the sea And when she is charged she controls me. I crash and I cry in her mischievous face And when she is running my waves give chase. She levels my foul mood with a gentle breeze, Calming all my seven seas, And I at times can soak throughout her Crying and raining my boundless water." "Well done," hissed my tormentor. "You dream finely yet are chilled to the bone....

The Age (a Poem)

Tonight I would like to lie asleep and think and dream of Airstrip One. This room is small and dark, cold and hard, but if I can but think of her I will transcend the glum confines. It's my turn to ask what the love thing is all about? I heard one bleeding from rape brought in last night. I'd forgotten until now. A poem for the age they'd wanted over in the past, which is a separate land according to...oh...I forget now who!? The mind is slipping a lot of late, which is down to my habits. But I won't admit that even to myself. On my stroll this morning I found I was pondering the possibility that second-hand clothing could be of third or fourth-hand origin (hell, even fifth-hand!). Like I said, I'd like to lie dreaming of that great land. Sometimes I envisage the land as a lady, reclining with grace and allure, on a celestial chaise longue (but that's neither here nor there, a mere aside, so quickly back to the matter at hand). I'm cancelling the ...

Flickriver

Dear Readers of my blog (of whom I'm sure there are oodles), As you know, I have something of an interest in photography. To quote Paul Simon: "I love to take a photograph." I've recently discovered Flickriver " a web-based Flickr viewer that allows its users to view photos quickly and easily". To quote an article I found on the web: " Flickr's been  changing up its look lately , but the photo sharing site still puts your photos on white backgrounds. If black is more your backdrop, and you like the minimalist look, Flickriver gives you Flickr photos with a new layout." Anyway, I found many of my photos on the site and I have to confess I'm very pleased with how they look.  I've put the link below so you can check them out yourself (if you have the time or the inclination). Bus Ride

Morning came, on the bus again, and someone had smashed a stop along her route. The glass in smithereens upon the pavement spoke of a person's fear, anger and possible psychosis.

The River Laune at Killorglin

Dark Deal

The angel was burning in the hot city air, The longing to take flight followed her everywhere, The hunger and yearning under her wings Persisted day and night in the city's quagmire of things. She took the boy one time the sun was down, He was carried to the court of the king with no crown, At dawn they were both human again And memories came to haunt, Hired hands of a dark force Spoke of an arrangement. The boy said: 'When can I see you, when, oh, when?' And she said: 'Only in the public park, or the place they sell the victory gin.' The angel is still burning in the hot city air, The longing to take flight still follows her everywhere.                                                                        © Brian Ahern 2017
